About the By* family of services

ByMemory is part of a broader set of services called the By* (pronounced "by-star") family of services.

The By* family is a coordinated set of services based on a set of key abstractions, designed to allow highly generalized interactions within and among each other. These abstractions include such things as individual persons, businesses, physical locations, and events. The By* family includes services to represent and cater to each of these abstractions, and to allow rich and complex interactions among them. The result is a coherent and powerful, generalized services model.

ByMemory is one of a group of four services that are oriented towards the needs of individual persons. This group consists of: ByName, ByNumber, ByAlias, ByMemory. The first three of these cater to the needs of living persons, providing services such as a personal domain, website, e-mail, mobile messaging, integrated support for mobility, and various other capabilities.

When an individual person dies, ByMemory is intended to allow the living to continue to maintain a presence for the deceased person in an appropriate way.

The intention is that when a person dies, the person's ByName and ByNumber accounts will be transitioned into a ByMemory account. Responsibility and authority for maintaining the deceased person's ByMemory account will then be assigned to another ByName account, designated by the deceased before his or her death.

The By* family is itself a work in progress. These services are in varying stages of development, in some cases providing only very basic capabilities.

All By* services are Libre Services, and can be freely copied and reproduced by anyone. Everything required to reproduce ByMemory or any other By* service is available at the BySource and ByBinary software distribution sites.

About Libre Services

Libre Services are an extension of the principles of free software into the domain of Internet services. Free software allows complete freedom of action: it may be copied and reused without restriction. Libre Services provide equivalent freedom of action: they are Internet services that may be reproduced and redistributed without restriction.

Libre Services are implemented entirely in free software, based entirely on patent-free protocols, and reproducible as a complete service by anyone. Any company, organization or individual can reproduce and host any Libre Service, and deliver the service to others. Or any group of individuals can host the service for themselves, thus acting as their own service provider.
